The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is a year to fully explore and develop your creative potential in preparation for Higher Education. Foundation students will acquire the knowledge, breadth and quality of work necessary to sucessfully compete for a place on a specialist degree course; most of which favour Foundation as the preferred entry qualification. The variety of specialist disciplines within art and design can be bewildering and the breadth of experience offered will help you to make an informed choice about your future career.

The course offers a wide range of disciplines including: - Painting - Photography - Fashion - Ceramics - Print - Computer Aided Art and Design - Sculpture - Film and Contextual Studies . Structured sessions concentrate on the fundamentals of visual language providing students with a sound basis for all future study. Visual studies, process workshops and core assignments will help develop practical, conceptual and professional skills. Students are given an insight into the four broad specialist areas ofFine Art, Fashion / Textiles, 3D Design and Visual Communication. Stage 1 of the Foundation Diploma is generic, but in stage 2 and 3 students will choose to focus on one of the four core disciplines and work towards a major project and a final exhibition. Study vists are an intergral part of the course and students can expect to visit exhibitions within the UK each term, with an extended international visit each year.

The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the West Wales School of the Arts in Carmarthen provides a creative environment which encourages and stimulates creative inventiveness, experimentation and analysis. Most students progress onto specialist Art and Design Degrees, but some students elect to join the course for a creative gap year.
