Fine Art Painting is a practical course offering students a diverse and thorough experience of the painting process. The course provides a specialist experience for students who wish to immerse themselves fully in the opportunities that this subject has to offer. Through the rigorous exploration of materials and techniques we aim to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the craft of painting whilst developing and nurturing your personal visual language and conceptual concerns through guided experimentation, critical debate and analysis of studio practice. This is supported by a programme of critical theory lectures and seminars, placing practical experience within the historical and contemporary context of painting and fine art practice. The course includes enterprise and professional practice modules to help students achieve their career ambitions. A skills based first year provides an exciting and effective starting point from which to establish your own personal visual language. Workshops sessions develop technical competence and engage you with practical issues regarding image construction through the preparation and application of a broad range of contemporary and traditional painting and printmaking media. Year two provides a transitional phase leading to independent learning. You will receive strong tutorial support from a range of staff. Through negotiated projects you will be expected to pursue your particular interests, concerns and further develop appropriate skills. The third year is a period of consolidation and continuing development of studio practice whilst carrying out sustained practical and contextual research. You are encouraged to develop your own vision and produce a resolved body of work leading to a final year exhibition.
