Casting Around PDF Print E-mail

Most art creation happens behind closed studio doors – and when the art processes include an element of danger, those doors are usually bolted from the inside. So, seeing iron melted at about 2000°C (almost twice as hot as bronze) and poured into moulds is a rare experience. On 15th October the West Wales School of the Arts (WWSOTA) showed this technique of producing cast iron sculpture at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea in order to complement the Meltdown exhibition I had curated at the Mission Gallery, and to act as a precursor to the 6th International Conference of Contemporary Cast Iron Art that is being held next July, at the Kidwelly Industrial Museum (www.internationalfe10.com).

Melissa Hinkin Poster

Melissa Hinkin

Melissa Hinkin’s sculptures are an investigation and exploration into the physical, historical and representational characteristics of raw materials and their industrial production. Her starting point begins with collecting materials from builder’s merchants, quarries and DIY shops, from which she begins to develop her own language through the appropriation of archetypal shapes and patterns.

There is a deliberate juxtaposition within her work, raw materials reminiscent of the landscape and a primitive aesthetic, pitted against industrial products which attempt to echo the presence of ‘modern man’. These two-part compositions are in a state of tension and flux, both are dependent on the other for stability and balance, yet as the clay slowly begin to shrink, the sand gently slumps, the balance begins to shift, and the separate identity of the materials become apparent. Hinkin is consciously stacking, binding and layering these materials, nurturing them and yet placing them in vulnerable situations. Her minimal approach and simple compositions create a transcendental state, her sculptures reside in a tentative condition between construction and de-construction.

The materials within Hinkin’s sculptural works retain their own history and identity while their coupling creates a new narrative and consequently psychological tension. Her sculptures’ subversive composition and animated titling transform the work into theatrical props, not only creating internal dialogues but projecting external narratives. Titles such as ‘Breath Easy’ and ‘Your Gentle Touch’ suggesting there is more to these sculptures than mere materiality.
